Stormwater is rain that runs off surfaces such as rooftops, paved streets, driveways, and roads. As it travels, it can pick up contaminants that end up in our public waterways. Left unchecked, stormwater contaminants and pollution have detrimental effects on our water quality and natural habitat and cause flooding and erosion problems.

Managing Stormwater
The City of Bonner Springs is regulated by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program to manage its stormwater so everyone in Bonner Springs has cleaner creeks, streams, ponds, and lakes to enjoy. The program provides residents with water quality protection, watershed planning, and stormwater management.

Tips for Reducing Water Pollution
  • Don't over use fertilizers and pesticides on your lawn. Follow the instructions on the product.
  • Don't throw trash, chemicals, or solvents into storm drains.
  • If you do your own oil changes, take the used oil to an auto repair shop where it can be recycled or disposed of properly.
  • Inspect your septic system every three to five years.
  • Use nontoxic cleaning materials.
  • Wash your car on a grassy area instead of in the driveway where water can wash into a storm drain.
